Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect at a Weekend Workshop?
Each workshop will contain independent, small group, and large group activities.
Examples of independent activities for your family may include a scavenger hunt or reading time. Examples of small group activities may include hands-on bug or plant exploration or usage of scientific equipment and tools. Examples of large group activities may include games, recall time ("What did you do/learn today?"), and guided nature walks.
You and your child will not be required to do anything you do not wish to do, so rest easy--even if there is something your child is interested in doing that you do not feel comfortable participating in, that is completely okay. It's what I am here for! :)
What should I (an adult) do at a Weekend Workshop?
I have one expectation for parents and guardians: that you supervise your children. You know them; you know if they are likely going to try to eat the materials or squeeze the animals. Please, please, please help me keep everyone (and everything) safe by discouraging any behavior you see that could be dangerous or harmful to us or the environment (e.g. not washing hands after touching bugs, littering, etc.).
Adults are welcomed and encouraged to fully engage with any and all activities, as this is a potential bonding time for you and your child (and you might discover a new interest of theirs!), but you are by no means required or asked to do anything that makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable (e.g. if you are afraid of bugs, you are not obligated to touch the bugs, even if your child chooses to).
How is a Weekend Workshop with the Nature Network different from a summer camp?
Nature Network is designed for whole families, not just as an activity for a child. Unlike summer camp, Nature Network aims to start conversations and encourage action within a family and the surrounding community. We want tools, skills, and interests begun in the Nature Network to go with your family; it is not only for connecting with nature--it is for connecting with each other as well. Activities are planned with families in mind, and adults are welcome and encouraged to participate on a level at which they are comfortable.
How much does it cost?
It costs $10 for each participating child for 1-hour workshops, and $15 for 2-hour workshops. (For example, if you had 2 participating children for a 2-hour workshop, it would cost $30.) I accept cash or Venmo.
This covers the costs of materials for activities and/or to rent the space.
That being said, if money is an issue, please let me know as I do not want it to prevent your family from participating.
If you are interested in "sponsoring" a child/family who is unable to afford it, please let me know as well.
I want to drop my child off for a longer program on school holidays or summer. Is this an option?
Currently there is nothing in place, but I am open to it! I work summers and usually work on teacher workdays/public school holidays, so an extended-day program would still be on a weekend (for now). If you are interested, please contact us! If there's enough interest, I'd be happy to host a longer workshop.
*NOTE: All children who are dropped off for an extended-day must be potty trained.*
